How the German Pension System Works

The German pension system, or Gesetzliche Rentenversicherung, is a pay-as-you-go system based on "Pension Points" (Entgeltpunkte). Your final pension amount depends on how many points you accumulate during your working life in Germany.

Calculatiing Your Pension Points

One pension point is earned if you earn the average German salary for a full year. If you earn twice the average, you get two points. If you earn half, you get 0.5 points. The total points are then multiplied by the "Pension Value" (Rentenwert) at the time of your retirement.

Retirement Age in Germany

The standard retirement age in Germany is gradually increasing to 67. Our Rentenrechner helps you see how retiring early might impact your monthly payouts through "deductions" (Abschläge).
